Saturday, March 10, 2012 Lower Palouse Canyon Hike, Lyons Ferry State Park to Palouse Falls 9 a..m. - 5 p.m. Before 9 a.m., meet at Lyons Ferry Fish Hatchery at Lyons Ferry State Park under railroad bridge. The Cheney-Spokane Chapter offers a hike led by Lloyd Stoess and Gene Kiver. The hike includes geomorphology, geology, botany, zoology, Ice Age Floods, and early Indian history. The flavor of the hike is dependent on the shared knowledge of those participating. The hike follows a combination of established trails, game trails, and bush whacking. There are also some steep ascents and descents but no special equipment or training are required. The distance of the hike is eight (8) miles. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR HIKE: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most difficult, this hike rates as a 10. A hiker should be in good physical shape (i.e., be able to hike three (3) miles without breaks). It is suggested that participants do some up and down hill hiking prior to the fieldtrip. A hiker should not have serious heart or vertigo problems. Registration fees are $15 for IAFI members, $20 for non-members, and $5 for students and teachers. Thursday, March 22, 2012 Nyberg Heritage Chestnut Tree, Tualatin Heritage Center, Tualatin, OR Tualatin's 25th anniversary as a "Tree City USA" designee: "Nyberg Protest Saves Chestnut Tree". A spreading chestnut tree still standing at the southbound Tualatin Exit 289 ramp is the focus of a 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 22 presentation at Tualatin Heritage Center by Arne Nyberg whose family defied highway engineers to remove the beautiful specimen. Nyberg is active in statewide efforts to identify and save historic trees and will provide information on how to get involved in local Arbor Week activities in April.
